When he has to
make a living and cannot simply play patches, Chip is a Lieutenant Commander in
the United States Navy. He has recently finished serving in Baghdad, Iraq as a
Contracting Officer with the Joint Contracting Command-Iraq/Afghanistan and is
now at his next duty station in Naples, Italy. He has
formerly been stationed onboard the USS George Washington (CVN 73), at Naval Air
Systems Command (NAVAIR), as the Supply Officer onboard the USS John S. McCain (DDG
56) stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, completed his Masters of Science in
Information Technology Management at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey,
California and was the Military Detachment Officer in Charge onboard USNS Bridge
(T-AOE-10), stationed in Bremerton, Washington. He is originally from Kansas,
where he graduated from the University of Kansas with degrees in Political
Science and English - this is why there’s so much flowery B.S. in the book.
While visiting Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China over Thanksgiving 2001, Chip
met his lovely wife Kathryn. Kate is also a Naval Officer and was stationed at
the Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan at the time. He and Kate welcomed
their daughter Meghan into the world in July of 2006. She has been keeping
them both VERY busy since this time and thus Chip’s time for working on Vol. 2
of the book and attending to collecting issues has been limited.
Chip spent his Scouting youth in Kansas where he became involved as a Cub
Scout. He capped his Cub Scouting time by earning the Arrow of Light. He earned
his Eagle in 1985 and earned his fourth Bronze Eagle Palm in 1989. He has held
most every Scout youth position from Scribe to Senior Patrol Leader and was
active in his home Order of the Arrow (OA) Lodge, Nani-Ba-Zhu #321. He served
in many capacities in the Lodge, including Lodge Chief and was also Section Vice
Chief for Section NC-3. He is a Vigil Honor member of the OA and a recipient of
the Founder’s Award. Since he joined the Navy, he has been involved with
Scouting in Northeast Georgia Council, Tidewater Area Council, National Capital
Area Council, Monterey Bay Area Council, Chief Seattle Council and Green Zone
Council. Chip first attended Philmont as a camper in 1985. He was also a
camper in 1988, a participant on the OA Trek in 1989 and attended National
Junior Leader Instructor Camp (NJLIC) in 1989. He served on NJLIC staff in 1990
and was a Ranger in 1991 and 1993.
He has collected a multitude of different things (bugs, stamps, pencils, etc.)
since childhood and began collecting scout patches when he purchased a small bag
of generic camp patches at his local Scout camp, Camp Kanza. His main Scout
collecting interest is Philmont and he collects anything and everything related
to the ranch and the Philmont experience. He has been building this collection
since 1990. In addition to Philmont, he collects everything from his home
Council and Lodge. He also dabbles at collecting other Boy Scout memorabilia:
metal objects, coins, Boy’s Life magazine, Scouting magazines, equipment
catalogs, Tom Clark scout gnomes, pennants, toys (train cars, models, Hot
Wheels, etc.), popcorn patches, patches with George Washington kneeling in
prayer (the Valley Forge pose), winter camping patches (Klondike, Freeze-o-ree,
etc.) uniforms, backpacks, Region 8, National Jamboree, National Order of the
Arrow Conferences, posters and other things he thinks are "neat."
Chip is a life member of the International Scout Collectors Association and is
currently serving as the High Adventure Columnist for the ISCA Journal. He is
also a life member of the Philmont Staff Association, where has written articles
related to Philmont memorabilia for the High Country publication.
